Starting your journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is exciting — but it’s also full of learning curves. At our academy here in South St. Louis County, we see new students grow quickly when they understand (and avoid) these common beginner mistakes.
1. Using Too Much Strength
Many beginners try to muscle through techniques instead of relying on proper leverage. BJJ is all about efficiency — slow down, relax, and focus on learning the mechanics.
2. Skipping the Basics
Fancy submissions are fun to watch, but strong fundamentals — like shrimping, framing, and posture — are what make those techniques possible. Build your base first; the advanced moves will come.
3. Holding Your Breath
It’s common to get tense while rolling. Remember to breathe steadily. Controlled breathing keeps your mind calm and helps conserve energy during longer rounds.
4. Avoiding Tapping
Everyone taps — even black belts. Don’t hold on too long trying to “tough it out.” Tapping early keeps you safe and helps you learn faster.
5. Neglecting Consistency
Attending class once a week won’t help you progress as quickly. Set a schedule, stay consistent, and you’ll see your skills grow month after month.
